I know - snacks and drinks costs $$$. Thank god I was born a women cause I'm able to "smuggle" food and drinks into my purse and go to movies without people knowing!! If you're a guy, you can't pull that kind of stunt off. One time, I've seen a Asian girl who smuggled in some Chinese food and ate it while she watched the movie. Amazing what people can do!!

Food sales is how the theaters make a large portion of their profits. Much of the ticket cost goes back to the distributors because the theaters have to rent the films.

It started a little after the "Talkies" started. They offered popcorn and probably peanuts first. And probably soda pop too.I'm not sure why, but I'm glad they did. And did you know that part of the reason that going to the movies was so popular during the depression(besides being a great way to escape your problems for a while, that It was relatively cheap- you got newsreel and cartoons besides your movie-you could spend the day there) was that it was one of the only places to have Air-conditioning , no one's homes had them. You definitely got your money's worth.I wish the movies were a little more like that today.
