Wow... Lynn... Can I move in with you? And can I bring my fishtanks?

No, they don't waste a lot of electricity. I think the first poster said it best. Heaters use more electricity then filters (but, all the same, if you have tropical fish, you will still need another heater as well).

The first answer was perfect.

I have a 75, 55, 40, 15, and two 10 gallons. Our electric bill is around $17 in the winter. In the winter the only thing running on electricity are the tanks, the refridgerator and our computers charging. We don't have t.v or videogames. So it is pretty bare bones around here. We try to conserve as much as we can.

In the summer our electric jumps up a little- we occasionally run the a.c. It is normally around $30 a month.

nicely the filter out I certainly have is an Aquaclear. it is quiet efficient and hassle-free to maintain. Ive had it for approximately 3 months now and has labored super and it keeps the water extreme high quality and sparkling and the fish happy. I would desire to admit the reason i offered it became because of fact the close by puppy keep had a 50% sale on their aqua sparkling products one weekend. It has a three degree filter out equipment - first a sponge - then filtered by using a carbon bag and ultimately a 'bio bag' (which i think of is only slightly bag of porus rocks meant to hold 'solid bacteria'. Im undecided how the pump makes the water circulate in the time of the three layers despite if it style of feels to artwork super. The sponge and bio bag are nevertheless in super shape only element i had to do is rinse them in some aquarium as quickly as. the only area that i regulate is the carbon bag which I in many cases substitute as quickly as in step with month. wish this allows. Cheers

Agree with 1st answer... No filter = Waste lots of fish as well as water (Need to change the dirty water).
Just buy one that can circulate about 3 ~ 5 time the tank water capacity in 1 hour.

Not having filters in an aquarium wastes a lot of fish.

Filter is about 20Watt on average, buy a genuine one it save you on electricity and maintenance reliable.

No filter in the tank will caused nitrate and incomplete bacteria to form which is harmful to your fishes.

You may want to consider bio filter with a small external pump, that may save you some cost but quite noisy at time.

They are not high strung appliances. Lights, TVs, computers, etc. use a lot more electricity than an aquarium does. Call a pet store and see what they have to say, they will probably be able to help you find the most energy efficient model.

they use very little electricity - my filter uses 5 watts, my computer uses 300 watts. a light bulb normally uses 60 watts.

gives you an idea how little electricity is used.
