I have been trying to burn a CD for days using Media Player and Sonic Now. Both programs tell me there is no CD in the drive and the CD is brand new. My computer is Dell and it is about two years old. I burned a CD just three weeks ago on media player, and now for some unknown reason it will not work. HELP!!!

It could be a setting or damaged hardware. Sometimes disks come broken or defective in the package sometimes it could half the disks or 1.

I have never used a burning software and or hardware in my life or heard of anyone else using them without running into problems. Its a technology that is full of problems. Some are hard to fix sometimes its simply a broken drive or so on.

Any more info would help but there is at least 3-4 things that it could be.

I suggesting right clicking on my computer selecting properties going to the hardware tab and selecting device manager. Then find the CD/DVD drive that seem to be having problems and run the Troubleshooter it will take you though many steps and try its best to solve this problem for you.

Are you using cheap CD-R discs. Certain brands will have 1 dud out of every 5-10 discs. Try a music cd or a cd-rom that you know is good. If that works, try a different brand of CD-R discs .

CD-R's are write-once discs, so you can't format them. what's written on them can't be erased.

if you're having problems trying to write to an empty disc, make sure it's actually empty. often, programs will start trying to write something to a CD-R, then bomb. it'll write a tiny bit of data, but then screw up, making the whole disc useless, after which the only thing you can use it for is to rest your coffee cup on.

you can flip it over. if there's a small ring around the hole, then your CD is junked. the disc session will be open, but not properly closed, so your CD-drive thinks it's an error and can't see the disc. if it's all 1 color and smooth, then it's probably OK.

Have you tried a different CD-R? Also, is the drive being detected? Does the drive work (try it out with a regular music CD).

If it's a CD-RW, then yes. For a CD-R....no. If the cd has been closed it won't be able to be burned. That doesnt 'sound like the case. Sounds like your burner could be at fault. CD-R burners are so cheap these days that you can replace it for almost nothing.

No you don't because when you burn the CD it is formatted automatically with CDFS file system. Just use the media player to burn and everything will be done automatically.
