Fixing a car today is expensive regardless of the engine configuration. And whatever brand of vehicle you buy the technicians at the dealership will be trained to repair it and as these vehicles become more common it will be no different than any of the other changes that have come to cars over the years. I started as a mechanic back in the late 70,s when things were pretty simple compared to how they are now.But while being more complicated technically speaking cars today are SO much better than they were then. It used to be 100,000 miles on a car meant it was about ready for the scrap pile but cars today routinely with proper care last twice that long.I recently sold a Dodge truck that had 192000 miles on it and it had never had a serious engine problem. So while today's cars are more complex the mechanics that repair them are better trained as well so not to worry.

this is a real good question,,the answer is,,all the mechanics out there now Will have to update there training a little,,there really not that much different than a regular car,as far as maintenance goes,,as for the electrical,,part that's a little different,,i guess this will either make all of us better mechanics, or separate the men from the boys,,i have looked a few of them over ,,and so far they don't look to complicated,,but the car company,s are going to slow about sharing the info we will need to work on them,,repair,s should not be that much higher,,if any,,because they will need less work done on them,,i just hope that all the mechanics out there don't get greedy,,and take advantage of the people buying these vehicles,,only time will tell for sure,,i hope this help,s.

you have a very good point, presently only the dealer can work on them, except for routine stuff, on the other hand, hybrid warranties might be pretty good, but what it comes down to is gas mileage, the basic hybrid is a step in the right direction but some plain old cars can just about equal them in mileage, whats coming is this- the plug in hybrid, because some clever, resourceful home mechanic types in CA have managed to alter their Prius's so they can plug them in at home and increase their mileage something awful. Toyota at 1st saying it wasn't practical, are now being forced to admit that it is not only possible but they are going to make hybrid plugins. These future hybrids will have much better battery packs. Mileage over 100mpg is expected. At the present time the cost of electricity at home makes it economical to use it instead of gasoline in your car's tank. But if these cars take off. The electrical grid will need improving and new power plants will be needed.

Dealers will fix them. Yes, money-wise hybrid will be unlikely cheaper to keep than some small car, but, for example, Prius is reliable and doesn't have any major problems. There are other benefits like you may get tax credit, it gives you a feeling of satisfaction that you care about environment, and guess who is going to smile at the gas station...
