I've only been through it once, but I have to say, I think lots of women quite frankly enjoy scaring the pee out of pregnant women or young girls. It hurt. I'm sure as heck not going to lie. But quite frankly it hurt more after. I had back labor (see the source for info), meaning my son was turned the wrong way so I felt all the contractions in my back instead my belly where they're supposed to be. My son was head down, but he was facing the wrong direction. It felt like the worst period cramp I can imagine, however, for as long as they let me walk around I could manage it fine. Once they made me lay down b/c my water had already broken and he was facing the wrong way and they wanted to monitor him & me, THAT was rough. I cried, and I actually called my mom (my labor coach) 'mommy', LOL. But, even at that, I don't think it compares to what some of these women describe it as. After a while I did get a light epidural, I had them go light b/c I didn't want to be completely numb. It took the edge off, but I could still feel and was able to push easily.
As for guys, it shouldn't scare a MAN, but it might scare a BOY! Gross, oh yeah. But most guys aren't that easily grossed out. I mean, you lose control of all your bodily functions while your giving birth so...things....come out along with the baby. That's why not too long ago, it was standard procedure for the nurses to give an enema to all women in labor. So that's kind icky. The whole process can be rather gross, but then, on the other side of the coin it's such an amazing process that this little being grew inside you and came out and started screaming! It was so cool! I was sore afterwards for 2 weeks, it felt like someone kicked me HARD in the groin. But it wasn't an unbearable kind of pain. Just a nagging dull kind of thing.
Now, even though I answered the question and said all that, I agree with the other poster that labor is different for every woman, and how you perceive and deal with it depends upon your personality and how you deal with pain in general. I.E., if you freak out when you a get a shot, you may perceive it as being a lot worse than I did. I'm not 'tough' or anything, but I had cancer as a child and was in and out of hospitals for a long time, so, to me, it really woulda had to have been a lot worse to warrant those horror stories other women tell!
P.S. I had to come back and comment on the other poster saying how next time she'll go C-Section. I'm glad C-Section have come so far, b/c sometimes they're really needed, but to choose to do this...is nuts! It poses more risk to mom and baby (2nd source), and comes with a much longer recoup time, during which mom has a hard time breastfeeding or even lifting her baby (or anything else!). There are certainly reasons to go cesarean, but fear of pain isn't one of them, since you're surely to endure longer pain with a C-Section.

The worst period pain 100 times worse and 5 days since you last had a number 2 and it is the size of a watermelon.
My husband wasn't grossed out, he was in awe of me for nearly 3 months and thought I was just IT!
Is true though that the worst pain is over when the placenta has arrived, but no one tells you about the after pains when everything constricts back to normal

There are no such words to describe the pain. I literally passed out during my labor and I had an epidural. If I had the choice and had to do it over again(which I will do in several years) I would go with a c-section.
My husband didn't get grossed out, he was just amazed that we go thru all that pain. He knew I hurt, but he stood there and helped the entire time.

I was at my ex-wifes side for all 3 of our childrens births. I'm fairly sure it hurt quite a lot. I know my fingers hurt at the time because she was squeezing the crap out of them. I think if you are a chick wanting your partner to fully share the pain you go through then you should hold him by his goolies instead of his hand. I didn't watch the births up close, not sure if I could now either.

the labor is like the worst cramps you have ever had multiplied by 100, then the actually delivery burns like your vaginal canal is on fire and you are being torn in half. At least thats how i felt, and i cant wait to do it all again, it was the most wonderful experience.

It depends if you have any drugs. Labor feels like really bad cramps. I didn't have vaginal birth with my daughter and I'm not having vaginal birth with my son. But, I can tell you what labor is like. It's different for every women. For me it was like really bad menstrual cramps especially in my back.
