I have a 1991 honda accord that gets 30MPG for sale for only $1995 OBO. Excellent mechanical condition, interior in good condition, everything working including cold A/C, paint job needs a little TLC.

Get a Saturn...they are great cars. I've had 2 and am getting ready to buy a third. They run great and get good mileage. I don't know of a new car that costs under $10,000. Make sure you have a mechanic check out any used car you think you might want to buy.

Corolla will definitely fit your description, it's very economical and very nice car to drive. You can buy it used since they are very reliable, just make sure it was not used by rental car company - check the history report.

I like the new Toyota Yaris. It cost a little more than what you are looking for, but it get 40 mpg, and it is a cute little car.
