Automotive performance parts?

what are some good websites to learn about car engines and performance parts that can be installed? i have recently been more and more interested in cars and driving but do not have a lot of knowledge. i want to know what certain performance parts are for and the effects and advantages to having them. i would appreciate any website referances.
