Many people refuse to move beyond their prejudices that were either handed down or attained. They show extreme insensitivity and ignorance in doing so.

I learned quickly while living in Detroit in the late 1950s to curb any habit I had of calling a black a ******. I carried that admonition with me the rest of my life, regardless where I lived during and after my military career.

When relatives of mine begin spewing out the word in jokes or simply bigotry, I get up and walk away.

I've known many blacks that refer to others as ******* because they happen to show the ignorance and stupidity often attributed to a so-called ******. Usually, I never even type this word, but have done so in several of my stories as character dialogue dictated.

I believe the history of the word ****** started with *****, then Negra, then ****** for short. By the time the word reached the latter, it became offensive to blacks and other races.

I say let's get beyond such derogatory names of any race.

The technical racial term is "*****" which is Spanish for "black." "******" was originally a kind of misppronunciation or slang. It was not originally an insult, just a slang term like saying "ain't" instead of "is not." For instance, in Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn," the term "******" was routinely used and clearly not an insult. Over time, and largely due to the fact that black people were considered an inferior class by many whites, "******" came to be an offensive word.

first of all...nobody should be calling any black person that. it is an insult that goes way back. now a days only racists and bigots use that term to insult blacks. because during slavey blacks were commonly called that term as a racial slur. its a way of looking down on black people today. However...some black people call themselves this, because they feel it is a term of endearment for some strange reason. my advice to you is to never use it.

It's a very derogatory term, coined in the south (go figure). Actually, slaves used it to refer to each other, but when a white person used the term, it was considered extremely rude and derogatory. I grew up in the south, and used it in like the 1st grade. Got paddled by my teacher, and my mouth washed out with soap by my grandmother...not my mom...my GRANDMOTHER!!!

Obviously, it's not a word nice people use.

It's ok for most black people to call each other "*******" because we don't get offended by our own race. It's a love thing. People outside of the black race call us "*******" to get under our skin as a show of disrespect.

well turn on the radio, ride through the ghetto, walk through the mall, walk through the club and listen to every confersation between black people they call themselves that, what up my *****, hey *****.. damn *****..
it started along time ago as a racist name just like white cracker *******, wop, chink and so on.
but now blacks seem to like it so much they call themselves it like nothing but then if a white person says it oh its racist.
