Yes as stated above there is a trilogy.
First is The Giver
Next is Gathering Blue. Gathering Blue has a common theme to The Giver but a different story.
Last is Messenger. Messenger unites the characters from The Giver and Gathering Blue and we finally get to see how their destiny's are woven together.

Let's get this clear, lol
"The Giver" stands by itself as a book. It is Jonas' story.
Jonas is the leader of the community Lowry writes about in "Messenger" which takes place AFTER the events in "The Giver" Gabe is mentioned as being eight years old and being part of this community too :-)
"Gathering Blue" is hard to place chronologically but characters cross and connect between this one and the other two books as well. It takes place chronologically before "Messenger" but I am not sure whether it is also before the events in "The Giver" or is meant to take place at the same time. Kira, the main character in "Gathering Blue", meets Matt in "Messenger", and the implication is (at least I think so) that Jonas and Kira will eventually suit each other as partners, because they have a spiritual connection, or similar gifts, but this will not happen immediately.
The order I would read them in:
"Gathering Blue"
"The Giver"
"Messenger"
Hope this helps!

There are actually 2 books. "Gathering Blue" and "Messenger" which tie into "The Giver". All three are good books, but I think "The Giver" is the best written.

I didn't think they were a trilogy. I'm pretty sure they aren't. But still Gathering Blue is a great book.
