They are illegal because of a ban on trade with Cuba by the United States which started shortly after the Cuban Revolution.
There are also restrictions on travel and business relations with Cuba. It is thought that when Fidel Castro dies the US goverment will lighten up. The nationalisations which percipitated these trade sanctions are old history now.

Embargo on Cuba. American Cuban cigars are just as good. Farmers came over from Cuba in the 70s and set up shop here.

Because in the Cold War, Cuba supported communism and the Eastern powers. Fidel Castro was the leader and is the leader still. It boils down to that our government doesn't like him and so we won't trade with Cuba.

I think all imports/exports are banned to and from Cuba. Not totally sure though.
