The US is a great country. I've spent some time in other countries and am always glad to be back in the US.

But there are people running my country in ways that make me very ashamed. I look forward to the day they leave office and by their very absence restore the dignity of my country.

The US has strayed from the path of a righteous nation, but we can and will fix that.

There are many people who have travelled more than I have, but I have been to twenty countries so far in my 31 years.

There are a few countries that I think are pretty well equal with the US standard of living like Canada, Argentina (at least when I was there, don't know now), Germany, Japan, Australia (from what I hear, haven't made it there yet), Bonaire, etc...

Many countries I couldn't wait to get away from. People think Americans are gun nuts, try Central America. Fundemental things, such as being able to walk down the street without having a shotgun or an AK-47 pointed at me, are non-existant in some countries.

In the end, America is home. The lifestyle is great. It is safe for the most part. Even a minimum wage existance is better than any existance I saw in some places. I would rather be here than anyplace else.

America has had it's reality check which was long over due . US citizens were behaving badly when outside of the US . Generally treating others like lower life forms , I remember when I boarded a flight in Angola a few years ago everyone had to fill in a form detailing where they had visited within the last 2 weeks due to the SARS outbreak . This american lady belted out " I don't need to fill this in , I'm an American , we don't haves sars in America " That about summed Americans up for me , a belief that thier country was immune from an airbourne disease and that the higher life forms could not possibly contact SARS . The reality check came on September the 11th and everyone in the civilised world watched in horror . For me , this planet needs to be policed by the strongest nation , the most powerfull nation in order to combat the most powerfull threat to humanity . At present that's the USA . And why not them !! . Yes I know , a little wet behind the ears culturally , but still a nation that has compassion and donates to humanatarian causes . Unlike other nations and religions who are hell bent on destroying christianity and democracy and are basically corrupt . America keep up the good work , but don't believe like you have done in the past that you have no enemies or that you can not be infected or attacked one way or another . If you want to be the worlds policeman that's fine by me , just remember you have no bullet proof vest to wear so try not to upset too many non US citizens .

It's a big place with a lot of diversity so I can't generalise. All I know is that the American people I have met have been lovely genuine down to Earth people. I think there are a lot of opinions and ideas that ordinary Americans have that we don't get to hear and vice-versa. The American media keeps the people in the dark about a lot of stuff in the world and stirs up a lot of fears at home, same old crap the world over.

Just like here in the UK there isn't a lot of scope about who to vote for politically - so I don't think we can blame ordinary Americans for Bush. Long live the internet and anything else that can help break national and racial stereotyping and bring ordinary people to understand one another, because the politicians aren't going to help us do that.

judging by the answers "americanism" is very similar to religion. Youre told what to believe and you belive it, pure faith and no need to look outside the box.......I must say i love the "I love america, we are the land of the free".......and recently on a similar question i noted an american reponse saying "what other country are people trying to get into"........ is there a thought patern in the USA that Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany, France etc etc are not free and that the mentioned countries dont have over whelming immigration issues aswell????

I am from the UK and I have always wanted to visit the States to form my own opinion of the place and people.

The one thing that bothers me about the USA is that you can buy a gun at 16 and you have to be 21 to drink!

I love it:

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.

I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

I feel ashamed. I love my country and hate my government. Bless our troops...but damn our leaders for putting their lives in peril for money. The lower and middle class spill their blood for the rich to get richer and the poor to get terminal cancer, used as pawns and as always, poorer. We have too many people, too many dumb distractions and not enough organization. We are NOT the world police and you are not a unique and beautiful snowflake. We need to wake up and see what's really going on outside of your local newspaper and FOX news. Ask anyone from another country what they think about the States and you'll see not everyone loves it...God, from time to time, blesses other countries too you sanctimonious f*ucks.
