I don't think you need to go and lay on the couch , just yet. We all have crazy dreams from time to time about things that we don't understand. The way that I look at it is it's just your brain's way of dealing with conflict, fears, hopes and aspirations, it just comes in different forms sometimes. As far as the part about you speaking a language that you aren't exactly fluent in, since you've studied the language in the past, you do know how it's supposed to sound and some of the vocabulary, so that's not too far out. I personally have dreamed of being shot with a gun before, although, I have never been shot in reality. I could still tell you what it felt like in the dream, it burned really bad, almost like someone sticking a hot poker through your body. So, if your dream is weird or out of the ordinary, I guess we both need some psychological help.

I've always believed that there was no such thing as "normal". Normal pretty much means "to be like everyone else", and who wants to be that? Who wants to be like everyone else? It means that you're exactly like others, and I don't believe that's possible.
But enough of my rantings on normal. This is your question, not mine.
There's a story similar to yours about a woman who had dreams of living in a home in England, and having a family. The dreams became more and more realistic, and she could remember her dreams very well.
One day, she got too curious, and actually went to England and to the address she saw in her dreams. The family she had dreamed about answered the door, and she could remember all their names, and the house looked exactly like in her dream.
And as it turns out, one of the family members had died 20 years ago, which was how old she was.
Unbelievable, right? That's the story that caused me to believe in reincarnation.
Are you absolutely sure that the place was spelled "Zaun", and didn't just sound like it? Maybe Germans have a different way of spelling a 'z' sound.
Or maybe, in the past, it WAS a town/village/whatever, before a natural disaster occured and wiped it out (Like what happened with Pompeii)? Or maybe the place was there, but the battle had wiped it out.
Overall, it probably means that that was your past life. You probably lived in Italy or places where the spoke German.
But those are just my opinions and beliefs. If you want a real analysis, try going to see a psychologist or some type of professional.

It is possible, especially after three years, to start dreaming the language. And if you're at the level of the language where you can DREAM in it, you probably would get all the grammar and stuff right. You can believe what you want, but the scientific explanation is that you heard the word "Zaun" at some point, but really didn't pay attention to it / remember it. Probably wasn't a vocab word or anything, but you subconsciously filed it away.

I agree with the other poster that said "normal is a setting on the washing machine"
I dont think there is a "normal" when it comes to the human brain... it could be that you picked up your latin much better than you thought you did. The subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between reality and fantasy, so it could just be tapping in to the knowledge you gained in class, the conscious mind has a lot of other things to deal with during your waking hours.
OR for a cooler explination - you could be having Past Life flashbacks.
^^
either way I wouldn't be worried, just enjoy your dreams!

Latin is a dead language, I guess speaking it while you are sleeping could be normal, so to speak. I would be more nervous about, getting killed by the barbarian tribes....Sleep tight.....Have a good night....

That's freaking awesome! It could be normal, being asleep is a totally different state of mind, subconscious level. I would just say you have a very awesome imagination.

I would think so. Your mind develops itself while you sleep so I don't see why not.
