I know that "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first shown on TV, but who first filmed a music video? And does anyone know if I could get my hands on those first videos? I have a bunch of 80s videos, but older ones would be nice. Thanks.

Not entirely sure if it was "First", but I know the Beatles did promotional films for "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever". Another possibility to consider is that prior to the emergence of FM radio and the Album Oriented Radio format, many acts got their first big breaks on TV shows.Ed Sullivan or Top of the Pops, American Bandstand, there were dozens of shows that featured musical guests. Variety shows like that faded in the seventies, leading some people to quip that radio killed the video star first, but it never completely went away. (Showing my age) before MTV, I personally would stay up late to watch the Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack. So if you mean just straight performance video, that's about as old as TV itself.

I think it depends on your definition of the "first". Some noteable dates:

1941: The Panoram Sound jukebox played short videoclips alongside the music.
1956: Music-centered movies are popular - some movies integrated musical performances. Such movies include "Rock around the clock".
1966/1967: The Beatles air conceptual promotional videos for their singles "Paperback writer", "Rain", "Penny lane" and "Strawberry fields forever".
1970: Promos, early music videos, start to replace live performances of artists on video stages.
1975: The video for Queen's "Bohemian rhapsody" sets the language for today's videos.
1980: David Bowie releases a groundbreaking video for "Ashes to ashes".
1981: MTV launches with The Buggles' "Video killed the radio star".

Actually it was Tony Bennett's Stranger In Paradise way back in the 50's.

The first shown on MTV was The Buggle's Video Killed The Radio Star. Ain't it the truth?

It's actually said to be "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. Because it had so many harmonies and such, it was difficult to do live, so they instead made a music video. You can just go to Yahoo music and you should be able to look up Queen and find the video. Hope this helps!

I just want to say now I have "Ashes to Ashes" stuck in my head...
...thanks Rachel O!

I recall MANY 1970s songs having videos to them that HBO would broadcast in between movies, like "The Trees" by Rush.
