Because corporate America is still very traditional - the exception being IT companies. Piercings and tattoos, aren't considered "respectful" or representative of the archetypal "businessman" or "businesswoman." Dress and overall appearance can make or break a business deal especially when dealing with other countries and cultures.

Do you ever wonder why the FBI people are usually dressed nicely and wear the trenchcoat? It is about looking respectable and safe. If you were lost in a bad part of town who would you approach for help: a guy covered in tatoos and peircings or a well dressed business and groomed business man? I don't know many who wouldn't choose the later. So, you walk into an office that sells, oh I don't know, stocks or medical services. Are you going to trust the person covered in tatoos and peircings or the professional dressed person? You can say you don't mind but I am willing to bet that deep down you would mind. I think tattos and peircings will become more prevailent in the work place over time however. We as a society are gradually declining in what the older generations would consider politeness, honesty, integrity, and self-worth. Don't believe me? Ask an older person; they only look scary. :-) Or even just find a good spot in public, sit, put your defenses on hold, and watch the world go by.

The are not accepted because they are seen as strange. piercings are linked with negative attributes such as non conformism. It also depends on what kind of profession. Maybe in a more liberal and relaxed workplace they are accepted.
I am a teacher and once i had a student teacher that had piercings on her nose. The school director ordered her to camouflage her piercings with band aids. I thought it was ridiculous. She was an excellent person, very responsible and very much liked by the students.
Maybe in a few yrs they will be accepted, who knows.

some people go a little too far with piercings. i have my ears pierced 9 times (soon to be 11) and my nose pierced with a little stud. i am allowed to wear those at my work, which is good b/c i don't think i look trashy. but you have to admit that some people go into excess and that just looks bad in a professional setting. i hope that is never accepted.

in a professional setting they have a certain look they like to follow by my idea is to get into the business and establish myself and then get piercings and tattoos.. i don't think they ever will be unfortunately because not everyone in society accepts this look. they pin it to a thought they have that "they" live a certain type of life style.. and that's not necessarily true. if you show your smart or even start your own business and start a standard of your own then you might be able to change the way the professional standard is looked at now.

I just took an anger management class and to my surprise discovered that body piercings are a form of anger and self mutilation. The more you have, the more problems you are not dealing with. I think the professional world is aware of this and it points to what kind of person you are and what kind of employee you would be. This also applies to tattoos.

most people just give into the stereotype of what piercings represent, like my dad thinks anyone who has piercings or tattoos are drug addicts. i have a tongue ring, so does my friend and she works as a sales person for a large company and they don't see it as a problem, lately i have noticed that people are adjusting to piercings, everywhere i go i see tongue, lip, nose, and what ever else. i dont see it as anything wrong but thats just one opinion

They offend some people. That's changing, though. I have seen people with piercings in banks and that's one of the most conservative places to work.

Because it looks dirty, unprofessional, and childish. None of these are highly wanted among companies hoping to continue bringing in professional or old fashioned customers.
