Hello, I'm from Arkansas. Some of my buddies and I are having a disagreement. Can someone settle our dispute. Are cottonmouth snakes and water moccasins the same snake? And are they poisonous? I say they are the same, but we do not agree. Thanks,

The Cottonmouth Water Moccasin
(Agkistrodon piscivorus)
There is only one North American poisonous water snake - the Cottonmouth Water Moccasin! Not to be confused at all with its many nonpoisonous neighbors, this snake is a pit viper in the same general family as the Copperhead and the Rattler.

A cottonmouth snake is a water moccasin - and is very poisonous, aggressive and dangerous down here in Florida, especially during breeding season.

No they are not. A Cottonmouth has a white cotton mouth inside. I hope you never see the inside of the mouth up close. Cottonmoush and Water Moccasins are very poisonous.

Two names for the same snake. Water Moccasin is the real name but It's commonly called cotton mouth because the inside of it's mouth is bright white. And they are venomous not poisonous. Any type of animal that injects a toxin into your body is venomous. If you touch or ingest a toxin from a plant or animal and become sick then it is poisonous

They are the same thing & both are venomous (not poisonous - 2 different things).

Cottonmouths are closely related to copperheads - maybe he was thinking about those?!

yes, they are the same snake, and yes they are poisonous.they are also the only snake in the world that can deliver a bite under water.they are also one of the few snakes that are territorial, and they will aggressively defend their territory by giving chase to anything that tresspasses, including humans.most snakes will turn and run ; so to speak; the other direction to avoid conflict.
