The best costume I made myself was a mermaid outfit that I sewed out of actual swimsuit material so I could even go swimming in it. It was basically a very tight fitting skirt that reached my ankles, and a slit up the back just long enough so I could walk. But I also sewed hooks and eyes on the slit so I could fasten it shut to go swimming. I sewed big flowy mesh "fins" to the bottom that looked like the skirt had a train out of the water, and flowed gracefully while swimming in the water. I wore it with a two-piece swimsuit I had gotten specifically for the costume. It was all silver, and I painted scales on the "tail". It was really cool. =)

I was to chaperon a Halloween party, so I went as Moses. I combed white, water based, shoe polish through my beard and hair. I created two tablets, made of concrete and rock, than scribed the ten commandments, in Hebrew on them. That took a while and I had to ask for help from a Rabbi. I attached a wireless microphone to the bottom of a walking staff. This way when someone was getting out of hand, all I had to do was tap the staff on the floor, and it could be heard through the loud speakers. Got the person's attention, as well as everyone around him and/or her.

Last year, my 7-yr-old daughter was a geisha. I bought her a real kimono and a real obi from a website. I put some fake hair in to give her an elaborate bun, and stuck some chopsticks in it. I used a light coat of white Halloween facepaint on her face, and put some bright-red lipstick on her. It was pretty expensive, but it was incredibly cute!

Once for a costume i spent about 4 hours on an eyeball.

i was a knight back in the day. actually my mom made it. yeah, i was a little girl who wanted to be a knight. what can i say? i was a very dashing and brave knight.
i had the sword and the shield and the whole bit. it was really awesome. i remember feeling so wonderful. :) good times.
