Hi dr_jeckyl1. usually we refer a cpu as a single chip in a computer which acts like a main 'brain'. if u are referring to a whole computer system with a cpu, ram, hard disk and etc, we usually refer to that as a computer system. its misleading at times but this is just to get the terms correct.

If you are looking on find more about what is good about a computer system, there are many parts to look at. Important things to look at in a computer system is as follows:

1. CPU (processor, Intel or AMD)
2. Chipset (the main chips controlling the whole motherboard. There are various types around, Intel makes their own too, Nvidia now makes chipsets, VIA are long time makers, SIS also). The chipset is important as it determines what the computer is capable of doing, what addition peripherals can be added, functions available and many.
3. RAM, technically the more the merrier. There are also different RAMs available. SDRAM, DDR-RAM and DDR2 RAM. DDR2 is the latest and is cheaper. SDRAM and DDR are old and is phasing off so avoid but these.
4. Video card, usually referred to as a 3D card if it can be used to play 3D games. They have ATI, Nvidia, Intel, VIA, SIS or more makes video cards. Some are built-in and some are addon cards. It usually better to get the addon card as they are easily replaced if broken.Built-in are cheap but like-wise, harder to replace if broken.

If u are looking at Windows Vista as an upgrade, u need a video card which support directx9. Meaning to say, your video card should at least be a decent 3D card. I still cannot understand why u need a 3D card to run an operating system. hmm.

Hope this helps, dr_jeckyl1. All the best.

First thing you should do is write down all the things you plan on doing with the computer, i.e., play games surf the Internet, etc. Then find a reputable computer dealer, one that will answer your questions somewhat honestly. Remember expensive is not always better. You can get really good computers out there by comparison shopping for less money. Also tune your radio to the Kim Komando show and you call pick up some good pointers.

You can read up on the foremost used processors in today's computers by going to the manufacturers' websites, those being:
www.amd.com
www.intel.com
Google reviews, processor name, manufacturer, etc.

By the way Microsoft Vista is an Operating System, not a processor.

A good cpu will open doors and buy you flowers. A bad cpu will break your heart.
