If David Ortiz walked into a room they'd probably kiss the ground he walked on,but if Bill Gates (the founder of Microsoft, for those dummies out there) walked in they'd probably call him a geek.
Bill Gates has done alot more to make our lives better than some stupid baseball player. What's the big deal about people who play a game?

David Ortiz works on national television; few people have actually seen Gates work. People who like sports find sports interesting and entertaining. Also, people who like sports also often like to play them (contrast with Gates, who doesn't do anything that most people like to do, except make money). Furthermore, sports can indeed make people's lives better -- there is more to life than not dying. Sports provide drama, anticipation, history, camaraderie, emotion, conversation, and more. Lastly, I doubt that most sports fans would really have a dim view of Bill Gates. Indeed, I think most people, sports fans or not, are quite impressed by Gates's achievements.

If sports don't interest you (or interest you much), that certainly doesn't bother me, but it might help to keep in mind that there probably are things that you care about that other people don't. It's just the way we are; we don't all have the same interests, and isn't that a good thing, really?

it's more about entertainment. Sports figures are entertainers in a way.
To make a statement that one person has done more to make our lives better than another is relative to the person being helped.
Bill Gates is the richest person in the world and a terrific philanthropist, I wouldn't value the opinion of anyone who would call him a geek.

Sports are boring to watch and serve to purpose other than the exercise factor. The greatest minds in history are pushed aside in favor of these overpaid drug-heads for doing very little to actually improve people's lives.

I dont really like sports, never have. I think it's the same as the way I feel about music. I'm good at it and cant do without it...and I guess others feel the same way about sports.

PS...I would never kiss a ball players feet, can you imagine how much bacteria in the locker room has touched his feet?! OMG

I love sports. But I think that some people use it as a bush to hide from their problems. Bushes don't offer enough protection, just like sports, even if they sometimes seem like they do. Wow that was deep. Sorry.

It is a psychological thing that has to do with hero worship. the hero acts out our fantasies for us, so that the hero's victory becomes our victory as well. There is also the component that has to do with belonging to something bigger than yourself.

I guess all the sports fans are fruit cakes! I don't know what the answer to your question is but I'd know they are weird to me too.

People that play sports would be MORE likely to be impressed with Bill Gates because he is extremely competitive, which is what sports are all about. It's the desire to be the best. If you want to be good at anything, you need to do it at the highest level. You probably aren't very ambitious if you think sports are useless. Developing that competitveness you acquire in sports is essential for succeeding in the real world.
