I would like to use this fan while travelling. I have a converter for voltage (240 to 120) but nothing to convert Europe's 50 cycle (Hertz) current to 60 cycle. If the voltage is converted to 120 but the cycles are left at 50, will the fan run 17% slower? or overheat? or just not work!

If it uses a hysteresis synchronous motor (most fans do), then yes, it will be a little slower. No it won't overheat and will work ok if you don't mind a little reduction in speed.

this website has a nice discussion on the difference between 50 and 60 cycle motors.

It will run slower, this can cause it to over heat.
