This was in a newspaper relating to the approval of "Plan B" the morning after pill as an OTC (over the counter) drug. It said the drug could lead to more premarital sex among teens. But the drug also is what stops pregnancy from occurring. So why would this concern conservatives? Can you paint a broader political picture?

I don't think I understand why this would be bad for conservatives considering it would lessen the amount of teen pregnancies which cuts down on amount of children born into poverty, which in turn would be less mouths to feed and less money needed to be given to the poor through welfare? Or what do you think?

I'm not conservative or liberal so open to any opinions.

Thanks

I'm for abortion when a woman is raped by some nasty bloody ugly nazi satan worshipper who has been on a child serial killing spree. So I guess I am an abortionist in some cases. I appologize to the first person who answered this question, you got me. I must be a "libtard".

Yeah I guess the STD's thing is a decent point. Though I think statistically the major ones are more prominent in older than younger ages. Good point about running around having casual sex though, younger people should be taught morals and concentrate on school work. I was just looking mainly at the economic perspective. So good answers on this.

Because that is where most of the problems are...I mean with the Conservatives that is, they don't have any control over their children just look at this Yahoo site every night and the loudmouth children on the web...You know where I'm going with this don't ya....They want to push their failures onto everybody else, and get funding from the Government and try to blame it on anybody but themselves don't they...I'm speaking of the Conservatives...You have to realize that at least 50% of the abortions going on are from Conservatives that's common sense, they aren't Lilly white like they want you to believe..I have girl friends that are Republicans that have several abortion and have been married 5 times or more...This blame game they are plying they can't support with any facts, and it isn't the poor either most of them have lost any opportunity to have a family or children...And then you have the Mexicans that are illegal that the Republicans invited into our Country for slave labor that are into a Child boom right now...That's just another Conservative problem they did to themselves. by getting greedy and importing in the illegals and turning their backs the other way over it...

The reason why anyone should be concerned with teenagers having sex is only that they might not be responsible enough to handle it.

With sex comes not just the risk of getting pregnant, which can ruin a young persons life as well as the lives of their offspring if they choose to have them and are not ready for them.

There is also a bigger risk of ending up with an STD; and with the STD rates at least in the USA being as high as they are, it is something that people should in fact be concerned about.

Lastly, there is an emotional maturity issue. Sex takes things to a different level and some people can handle it and others can't and this is even true with adults.

So there are reasons to be concerned. However, I personally have no problem with teenagers having sex as long as

A) it is with each other and not sex between a teenager and an adult (which is by the way where most of the teenage pregnancies and STDs come from

B) The teenagers are educated and willing to accept responsibly for their actions.

Interestingly enough usually the more educated children are about sex, the longer they wait before they lose their virginity.

The whole moral argument is based on opinion and that opinion is completely wrong. Making something as useful as plan b (Which is nothing more then a double dosage of birth control which is something that women have been doing for years anyway); not available over the counter is a form of control and I think it harkens back to men wanting to control the sexuality of women. The idea that more teenagers will have sex is just an excuse and a lame one at that.

If someone has a moral objection to such things they are certainly within their right not to use them and to teach their children their values; but when someone else forces their values on me there is a problem.

I KNOW that I am NOT conservative...
I don't know how I stand on teen sex - I guess I think it's been terribly cheapened to the point that it's just a meaningless pastime like videogames or whatever... Though, it can also lead to confusion and emotional turmoil, and with the kids (especially but not exclusively the girls) preoccupied with second thoughts on what happened last weekend, it's no suprise when grades go down.

The "morning after" pills aren't exactly the fun-and-games opponents seem to think they are. It's a kind of poison that doesn't quite kill an adult human, but causes some pain and some puking, and there are better ways to spend a day.

I guess on the bright side, it's not a mistake one would want to make again soon...

You have asked a great question. I'm guessing it is the highly religious groups that preach that premarital sex is morally wrong. They can't see that it is a good idea to let the teens know what causes pregnancy and std's.

Abstinance is something parents should discuss with their kids and sex ed should also discuss it but discuss everything else so if a child chooses to ignore parents and their church (let's face it, most do) they will know how to ensure no pregnancy results.

Personally, birth control of all forms should be free to anyone and everyone and that would help lessen the number of people born into poverty.

First of all, teenagers shouldn't be having sex. That is the best defense for teenage pregnancies. Just because there's a morning-after pill doesn't mean they can have all the sex they want and just pop the pill like crazy! Plus, it can only be sold to 18yrs and older, I'm pretty sure they'd ask for their IDs...my only concern is, what if that person is buying it for a much younger person? I really hope that the pill (looks like it comes in 4s), costs a lot of money, so that not everyone, especially teenagers, can get a hold of it. It should never be sold over-the-counter...I believe they are making a big mistake...If someone doesn't want to have the chance to get pregnant, then why have sex?---how stupid can they be?!!! Whether it's heat of the moment...they still should be aware or at least use protection!

Your forgetting that birth control doesn't protect against STDs- so that is a problem.

Also, Plan B is an early abortion (it causes the expulsion of a conceived fetus from the uterus). Which most conservative groups don't support anyway.

Finally, even if you could remove pregnancy and STD's from the picture (which you can't, entirely) would you want teens to be running around having casual sex with one another? I think most conservatives say "Lord, no!" Most liberals say "Yippee!"

Thereinlies the reason behind their responses

Because they are totally full of sh*t. Stunningly and embarissingly full of sh*t. They don't make sense on any other issue so why should this one differ? The hypocrisy is so blatant that I feel that I may go into a coma anytime I listen to a conservative talk... about anything.

Edit: I read some of the post before me and I almost lost it. You all are a bunch self-righteous, narrow minded idealouges. And callin someone an abortionist?!? What the f*ck is that even supposed to mean?! Do me a favor and leave the intelligent discourse to people who have more than 2 working neurons from now on...

The problem is not so much premarital sex as it is to Abortion on demand. I think they have decided to draw the line to abortion and say that it is not right to Murder an innocent life. Most Conservatives believe that life starts at conception.
There is another part to this other then a spiritual side. There is sexual promiscuity. It is not healthy for anyone, male or female to think that it is OK to have sex with anyone and that you can just abort if you get pregnant.
We, as adults, should instill in their minds that they have to be responsible with their lives as well as their bodies. Their body is something that should be held as a monument for their lives, not a tool to say I love you to whatever person they come across..

I think that teen sex is a problem for everybody, Liberals and repuke's, I know that is when girls are the most vulnerable to becoming pregnant due to lack of birth control or ignorance. That being said it is going to happen. It is gods law that we procreate and it starts at puberty. It is to replenish the human race. I think plan B is a good idea to help this situation. I do think that education would and is be a better alternative. But that is why they call it plan B.

The fact is that this has nothing to do with teen pregnancy or morals, it has to do with (like every other issue in this country) money. Money and power have corrupted politicians and lobbyists and now everybody has to be up in our S***. What needs to be said is that this is a medical choice and it is between you and your doctor. YOU and your doctor. Make sure you keep your politicians out of your vagina...or where ever...anyway a drug that helps women prevent unintended pregnancies should be available to anyone if it is found to be safe and effective.
