My stepfather always said it was so, I read an article that said it was so, but I can't recall where I read it..but, best of all, I tried it.
I woke up one morning, and I felt grumpy, irritable, and just plain mean. If I went to work like that, I would be fired for sure, so I planted a big smile on my face.
At first it was fake, but the more I smiled, the more relaxed I got, and before I knew it I was my old sunny self. I have done this many many times with the same result.
So yes, it works :)
After reading your question, I went onto the "Net" with hopes of finding the article. Did not find it, but I did find this one :)
Enjoy :)

It's the other way around... The chemicals in your brain make you smile...
When you look at an tiny tiny infant, they have bursts of smiles... It's believed that this is caused purely by chemical reactions (so it's not that the infant actually finds something to be funny).
The reason they believe they do this is so that it soothes the mother when they see their baby smile... and it's an instinctive survival method so that the mother would continue taking care of them...
Basically Smile=Happy mother=Mother takes care of baby=baby survives...

Laughter is the best medicine, changes the chemicals in the brain. it does a lot of wonders for different organs. Not the smile but laughter, do it about 5 times a day, you will see a difference. in sleeping, eating, energy and the whole nine yards.
