Unfortunatly, people with closed minds don't come with closed mouths.

Usually I find that those who decend into hate speech and insults first, are those with the weakest arguments. If they can't win the logical argument, they resort to calling the other person an idiot or trying to degrade them in some other way. Truth is that most people don't want the truth, they want reassurance that what they already believe, no matter how unsupportable or outlandish, is the truth. When the logic fights their point of view, they resort to name calling and insults, rather that examining what they have been thinking.
People will go to amazing lengths to hang onto their beliefs, no matter how far off target. The best thing you can do against such people is to let them go on their way. You aren't going to convince them. Fortunately, most of the time, they just go on leading misinformed lives. Unfortunately, at others, they decide to continually stick their noses into other peoples' private business. They just seem to need the validation that everyone else is doing or thinking things their way. To them there is only one way, one path, one answer.
I feel sorry for these people, their faith is so weak. They either must be absolutely right, or their world falls apart. How little faith they have in our world, the human race and the balance of forces in the universe.

People have always been and will always be that way. We all at some point have been just plain ugly to someone else. I only get like that when I am having a horrific day and I try to avoid people when I feel that way but sometimes it still happens. Also, I think that the older you get and the more you pay attention the less you care. You start to realize that other peoples attitudes do not define your sense of who you are. You always have a choice as to how you want to let those things affect you

I agree 100 %, it is an awesome idea, personally when I cant get along with someone I nicely leave them alone and so many times I long for the same, it should be simple shouldnt it? But, some people are so unhappy with themselves or their lives and they seem to not be able to stand other people being happy. So they like to ruin happiness for others, it will always be this way and what you and I need to do is learn to not let those people affect our happiness, realize they are free to behave how they choose, and reach out to the ones who add to our lives.

Unfortunately it is. We have so much freedom that we take it for granted. I went to Juarez Mexico in April and let me tell you it was the most eye opening experience ever. With the part of town that we were in there wasn't a rude, arrogant, offensive or obnoxious person around. They were all so grateful at what we were there to accomplish. But I have to say you can't blame us for everything because it started way before us. Best of luck to you find someone who will smile at you and say hello to you that doesn't know you.

Unfortunately, it is too much to ask. It doesn't have to do with freedom of speech. Hate is in the heart. People take out their anger for a variety of reasons, and for some people these reasons don't dissipate.

I'm with ya sister! People have really lost their ability to have respect for one another which just makes them look like arrogant and self absorbed asses. I don't think some good manners are too much to ask for from every single person I meet.

Maybe education is the answer. I don't really see too many ways of stopping hatefulness without interfering with freedom. Tricky.

Who's hateful? If someone points out the nonsense that someone is espousing in the form of an insane religious belief, is that being hateful, or is it just trying to bring him to his senses?

For some people, mean is a way of life. They can't live without being mean. It's for fun and sporting for them as well. Jerks!
