I have just bought a new coat and it says it can't be dry cleaned...why is that?

The chemicals they use in dry cleaning would damage it. You did not say what kind of coat it is. Do they give any cleaning instructions?

your coat may not be able to be dry cleaned,but you can take it to a dry cleaner to be cleaned proffesionally.dry cleaning refers to the chemicals used,without water,to clean garments.there are different options available today to clean fragile items.good luck

Some fibers (synthetic)will literally melt when cleaning fluid gets on them. Furs have to be cleaned by a furrier method, as they need special treatment.

certain materials like wool, silk, rayon, should not be put in your washing machine. The fibres of the material expand, which makes the material lose it's strength. Clothes may become rumpled, misshapen, change colors. So it is not a wise move to wash these items yourself, leave it to the professionals.
