Well, I need to duplicate the key because my apartment's buzzer doesn't work and the manager won't get it opened. So I have to go down three floors to open the main gate. I live in Bay Area.

Either slip the key boy a fiver or take a file to the ofending letters. the file thing worked for me.

They aren't supposed to duplicate the keys, but sometimes the kid behind the machine at those big box stores ignores the rules. They are unlikely to have 'do not duplicate' blanks, but they can give you regular keys that will work. you can also just go to your landlord and pay them for new keys.

Perhaps the manager will sell you a duplicate key. No reputable locksmith or keymaker will copy a key so marked.

Usually your building leasing agents will be able to duplicate it (usually at an exorbitant cost). The manager should be able to point you in the right direction.

I've seen those keys duplicated regardless of the "do not duplicate" on it.

Either you need to find an unethical hardware store or you need to ask for a spare from your landlord. You could also complain to the landlord that you intercom/door release isn't working.

Take the key to the person that gave it to you and have them make a copy. just tell them you lost your other one.
