I think that sometimes it's art, sometimes it's just scrawl. I think there should be somewhere that people can express themselves with tagging and have it be okay. It's inappropriate when it ruins things, though. I know that some people try very hard to keep their fences the way they want and it's not fair to them to have someone go and change it after all that effort. I know that some cities have a few walls or underpasses that they have given to good tag artists to use for murals. I like them.

I have seen some "Tags" that were very impressive. What I do not agree with is that they often deface public property and even private property.

I think it would be great if there were special places where these people could put up their work, maybe make it semi-permanent so it can be changed and updated periodically.

In San Francisco there are a few places like that and I like to go look at the artwork about once a year to see what is new. I am always impressed with the ability of the artists.

Coming from the inner city originally, I am very familiar with Tagging, and yes it can be beautiful. I have some friends who were killed, and then other friends tagged buildings with murals in their memory and it was a beautiful thing, however, I have also sen some stuff that is just plain offensive and should not be done, so I guess it depends. If the tagging is in good taste and for a reason then I am all for it, but if it's just some punk kids wanting to spray paint s**t, then I say NO WAY!!!!

I assume you mean graffitti, I guess some people see it as gangs marking their territory, like animals urinating on every tree - but others consider it art, I think it's an intresting subculture activity - in my city theirs a graffitti "artist/perpetrator" calling him/herself T.X.T.

I've seen it spaypainted on a bar, white markered onto mailboxes, and one time I was leaving my apartment building and their was a thick sharpe signature on the front door - I thought it was pretty cool, people might paint over it - but it's just a bit of more or less harmless social outbreak or teen rebellion, - he/she could be doing worse with their time

If your talking about murals, I guess most people can believe it's art - if it's being done without the owners permission and they get caught you can hardly blame them for pressing charges

so I guess it's okay if it's good - but it's wrong if you get caught ;)~

No, a tag is not art to me. Graffiti can be art (notably at Vauxhall Station in London, where the walls are adorned with beautiful graffiti art) but a tag is usually its lowest form.

A tag can of course be PART of a larger work, for example here's a few epic panels from Vauxhall:

The middle panel is amazing- the other two don't really do it for me.

That's just my opinion of course.

i know what it is and it can be beatiful, but there is a time and a place for everything. sometimes taggers ruin other things considered art with their tags. this is when it's graffiti.

It isn't right to tag any building or surface you feel like tagging. You shouldn't tag other people's property as they may not look upon it as art as you or i do. art shouldn't be pushed upon others but instead discovered for oneself.

maybe if tagging was approached differently, others may look upon it a little more favorably.

There is a time and a place for everything, but most incidences of this so-called 'art' form are just vandalism.

I think as long as they ask for people's permission then it's fine. Also I consider it beautiful if it's truely expressing an opinion. I don't consider it beutiful if someone's just claiming their territory or when you can't even read it.

If it's put in an appropriate spot and looks good. Some artistic graffiti looks like poopie.

Unless the "taggers" have the permission of the property owner, then it is vandalism, not art. No matter how how artfully done.
