i know why this won't work, and i would hope most people above a 6th grade education level would know, but i'm asking to see anyway.

so many people want a ton of money without working for it.you must learn special skills to get special pay... you earn what you're worth...a wal-mart greeter .... anyone can do that, that's not worth 16dollars/hour.

YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO LIVE OFF MINIMUM WAGE, ITS A STARTING WAGE OR TRAINING WAGE... IF YOU EXPECT TO FLIP BURGERS YOUR WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM NOT THE GOVERNMENT.

... your taking things to extremes... you guys only see in black and white...

things in moderation are good, but there is too much of a good thing... some raise is needed, but that much could damage the economy, since it would be such a dramatic burden on businesses

here's an example using Republican ideas...

you're for tax cuts... right... they can in fact stimulate the economy and even raise tax income, if done correctly... that's been proven... but you can't just cut the tax rate to 0 percent and expect the government to make more money... it has to be done at the right time and at the right amounts to work properly...

Because then there would be no incentive to get a better education, work your butt off and get out of low paying jobs. To raise it a little, so its not so pathetic is one thing but to raise to the same as what college grads and licensed professionals make doesn't seem fair. $7/hr is still very low, nobody wants that job forever but it will decrease the amount the rest of us have to pay in welfare. Why should tax payers have to compensate for big businesses who are just too greedy to pay a fair wage? Big business will never pay a fair wage if they don't have to. That is the reason minimum wage needs to be raised.

Because that would be too expensive for businesses; however, raising the minimum wage to $8.50 or so an hour would help many people. Since you're obviously a republican, could you live on $5.35 an hour? I didn't think so.....And if you're a Bush fan, history will judge him as one of the worst 10 presidents. This isn't a timely reaction, it's just that he's make almost every incorrect choice.

I guess that's better than the republicans who want to hire illegals at $2/hr or outsource jobs to foreign countries at 50 cents/hr.

You are an idiot OP. Do you really think Wal-Mart raising wages couple of dollars is going to bankrupt them???? They have been the #1 most profitable company for years... until the oil companies overtook them recently. Their owners, the Waltons occupy five positions in the top 10 BILLIONAIRES list. So do you think they'll go hungry if they paid their underpaid workers couple of bucks extra?????

If you want to find a business model that works with high wages, just look at Costco. Their employees are paid well over minimum wage yet they continue to be one of the most profitable companies around.

So don't tell me businesses will go broke.... maybe their CEOs won't be able to afford their 3rd Jaguars but they will not go broke.

The answer is obvious. The balance of poverty and wage is delicate. Raising the min. wage to 7.25 is not going to raise everyone out of poverty. That is why this is the federally mandated min. Each state can pass there own min wage based on local economies, such as NY. Not every local economy could support a 16hr min wage. Our government should be a compass for how we treat our work force. Showing that they believe the current min wage doesn't reach the poverty level at least makes us feel they care for impoverished Americans.

That's a good idea! Why? because giving the money to people who would actually spend it, at the grocery store or at the movies,or at the car dealer,or at the furniture store,to the contractor to renovate their house,or at the college their kids want to go to,and keep all those people who work in those and any other business, rather than give mountains of money to people who move it offshore so they don't have to pay taxes on it, or close factories here and move them oversees,or buy more politicians and elections seems like a better way to use the money.

No that would put the companies out of buisness, and even more people would be unemployed. Raising minimum wage isn't the answer, giving unemployed people government jobs or helping train them to get a job for free is the answer.

All right, not all Liberals think that way. I mean, would it hurt to raise the living wage to a livable wage? With inflation going on and all, I don't think it hurts to beg on both hands and knees for a bare minimum, does it? They'll still be where you want them; desperate, willing to work overtime to get enough to struggle to choose between food and water, so I don't know how a tiny increase would hurt a bunch of millionaires.

I'm a D, but I'm not convinced raising it is a good idea since it will intern raise the cost of everything. You have a good point though. It's kind of like how the Post Office raises stamps 2 cents and then a few months later raises it another 2 cents.

I think people know that they need to earn what they get paid but you have to also understand that it is necessary for minimum wage to go up in responce to inflation. I mean you dont really want to be paying a whole dollar for bread and be getting paid two dollars an hour. i am pretty sure you would stop eating bread!! hahaha no but seriously everyone needs to understand that economics is all about balance.
