First of all, this is a moot question. The existence of a god simply can NOT be empirically confirmed, short of that god actually becoming something that could be studied in a lab, and I don't think any deities would want to do that even if they did exist. :-) Science is, by definition, a naturalistic endeavor; gods are, by definition, supernatural phenomena.

I don't blame the believers for not wanting a scientific confirmation of god's existence though; it may turn out that the god proven to exist is very different from the god they chose to believe in! So whether science proved the existence of god, or proved the non-existence of god, either way it would be a severe threat to most theists' beliefs. Though quite frankly, I think most people would continue to believe in the same god that they want to believe in, rather than the god that was actually proven to exist. Humans are silly like that.

Finding a cure for cancer is both well within the reach of science, and something very worthwhile to strive for. So that would be my vote.

Science only confounds the existence of God and cancer is a natural human termination system which will only be modified by science to extend life a little longer.
