In Japanese folklore, these animals are believed to possess great intelligence, long life, and magical powers. Foremost among these is the ability to shapeshift into human form; a fox is said to learn to do this when it attains a certain age (usually a hundred years, though some tales say fifty). Kitsune usually appear in the shape of a beautiful woman, a young girl, or an old man, but almost never an elderly woman. There is some evidence that kitsune are an imported icon from China, but further textual and artistic support for the argument that they are indiginously Japanese, dating perhaps as far back as the fifth century, B.C.E.
Hope this helps.

Japanese legend tell of the Kitsune, a fox spirit that could take human form. They were tricksters, and some people had shrines stocked with food for them. 9 tails were on the oldest and most powerful Kitsunes, which might protect a temple or family house.

Bah on Kitsune! I prefer the Kumiho - the Korean nine-tailed fox. It takes the form of a lovely maiden and lures men to their dooooom!

In Japanese mythology there are spirits called kitsune.
They take the form of multi tailed foxes. the more tails they have the higher rank they are and the highest is 9.

It's kind of like cats, every time the fox dies it loses one tail, so basically foxes have 9 lives.
If you don't believe me, go fox hunting, you will probably find a fox with only one tail and when you kill it, it will have no lives left. 8(
