1. Learn the fundamentals of the position you are playing. From the general to the specifics.
2. Perfect them. That's part of what practice is for as a team, but when not in 'practice' you practice your techique(s).
3. When in practice, pay attention, do what you're told, don't be a wise guy. Ask the coach for tips and techniques. Respect your coaches and encourage others to do the same.
4. Don't be complainer. The coach can't do everything right and he certainly can't play all the team, all the time, etc. If you are not starting, it's your job to study the guy who is, figure out what he is doing differently than you, and get better than him, and then demonstrate it to the coaching staff.
5. Be a team player. When someone is being instructed in practice as to a skill or technique, and especially if he is in a similar position as yours, you listen just as though it was being taught to you. Ask yourself, am I doing this particular move as the other guy is being told to it? Can I perfect my technique and do even better?
Also about team players; when another player on the team is in need of help, and you are in a position to give it, do! Sometimes in games you are outmatched in one position or another. Hopefully not too many. Help your team mate out.
6. Read, study and know your playbook. Every play! Strive to know at least a portion of the guy next to your positions plays.
7. Pay attention to the details. A lot of what practice is about, once everyone knows the basic plays, etc. is execution. One of the biggest elements of execution is being at the right place at the right time. Everyone on the team, in the right place, right time, doing what their assignment is.
8. Stay in shape. Don't show up for practice thinking it is for conditioning only. There will be some of that but show up for first day, ready! If you need to improve as the season progresses, in some area, strength, speed, etc. get it done.
9. Be serious about; yourself, your postion and stature on the team, the teams success, the needs of others, coaches and coaching staff and in the locker room. No body appreciates a clown or the wise-guy who seems to care more about himself than the team.
10. Have fun and be positive! Laugh all you can! Encourage others to enjoy the game, practices, commoraderie, and celebrations. It is going to be a lot of work. Very physically challenging work. Brutal!
There will be times when you question if it's worth it. Most everything has peaks and valleys. When down, stay positive and suck it up!

Do the above, and you will excel. Regardless of what level you are playing at. Hopefully your team will as well.

I knocked heads for about eight years and loved it!
