Yup, you go over them full forward, and hit the play button just as the new scenes of the show come up. It rewinds slightly so you don't miss the beginning of the new scene. The skip takes about 5 to 12 seconds, depending on the size of the commercial.
Been doing that for 2 1/2 years now. What a time saver, and I can always watch the things I like when I feel like it, yet never miss anything I like.
New part of question (you should be more clear to start, save a whole lot of time) NOPE.

Yes, it is very easy to fastforward through the commercials. You simply hit the fastforward button three times and watch as it speeds through the commercials. As soon as you see the show begin you hit the play button. TiVO very nicely rewinds a little and begins to play. After you do this a few times you'll find it second nature to skip through the commercials in a few seconds and watch your show essentially without any commercials.

No. There used to be a 30-second skip button that could be used to skip over commercials, but TiVo disabled it. (There is a way to get that function back, however.) But there is no way for TiVo to automatically skip commercials, and they couldn't use it even if they could make it work.
