Yep! The IP address of the sending machine is in the header of the message. Accessing that is childs play if you know what you're doing. Tracing it to the source is simple and any ISP presented with a subpoena is going to hand over your information.

BTW, most proxies won't hide this, contrary to what some others have posted. There are a couple of "anonymous" e-mail systems that promise anonymity but most of them will buckle when confronted with a court order for disclosure. The few that don't keep any records at all are blocked by most spam filters.

Yes, it could be traced back to you. They can see what IP the message came from, unless you are using a proxy to use a different IP. Even if your IP changes, they will have the time at which the message was sent, and your ISP will have a log of who had what IP at what time.

The information they will have is probably just your IP, but that will be enough to identify you.

Yes, there is a record. They have to exert considerable effort to track you down, but it can be done.
