I swear...I'm gonna pity my future kids cuz they'll have me for a dad. Kids need to learn what it means to earn stuff. When the holidays roll around, you get your typical gifts... thats it. People grow up knowing "instant gratification" and nothing else. Try learning to save money...being responsible and earning your toys. I have a friend that was given everything when she was younger... she wanted a horse.... so she got one. She wanted a car, so her dad restored a vintage car and gave it to her. She didn't like it enough because it was "OLD" (never mind that guys would stare at her car (not her) whenever she drove by). So her dad got her a new car. She's an adult and her parents still pay for her insurance and most of her expenses. She has a trust fund that pays for all her "oops" moments and its truly sad because she doesn't know what its like to have to pay for your mistakes. Her dream for her life is soooo incredibly annoying. She's going to "get married" and "shop" while her husband works and pays the bills. oh... and she is "going to travel all over the world". She's overweight, needy, emotionally unstable, and can't hold down a boyfriend because she expects them to do everything for her. I swear this was started because of her environment. DONT GET THE FRICKING CELL PHONE! MAKE THEM EARN IT!! MAKE THEM EARN THE RIGHT TO KEEP IT! THIS IS HOW RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE ARE TAUGHT TO BE RESPONSIBLE! It's not in our nature to know how to manage ourselves. We must be taught.

A 14 year old girl should not get whatever they want, however on the cell phone issue, I am having this dispute with my daughters right now, they are 9, 10, and 11, and they all want cell phones. I have explained to them that they can't have them right now and they asked at what age they could. I don't feel there is a specific age, I feel that if my child is going out of the house without me or another adult, and just some friends, then she should probably have a cell phone in the event that she needs to call me, or call for help, or something of that nature. I am NOT a fan of these young kids having phones to just walk around and chat with whoever, whenever, at their parents expense. If it is NEEDED, then OK, but if not then I say no. At this point in time for example, my girls are not allowed to go out with friends unsupervised, so there is no NEED for a phone. Hope this answers your question.

I am the mother of a 13 year old girl that has had hers for 6 months. I fought against it all the way but I kept hearing everyone has one. She kept having to borrow friends when she needed to call me. Then I gave in for her 13th birthday and I havent regretted it. She watches her minutes and text messages and is respectful of that. She had to send it in to be fixed and I have to say I missed it more than she did! When she has it on her which is most of the time when she leaves the house, I can call and find out exactly where she is. She can also call at anytime and let me know where she is. Go ahead give in.

Nobody below the age of 15 really needs a cell phone. If they do for some strange reason, it shouldn't be a fancy expensive one, just a basic phone phone.

only way to teach discipline is to get one of those pay minutes phone and make teenager earn minutes to use phone. when minutes are up then no phone. She might need phone in case she finds herself in trouble one day at least i am assuming mom with no discipline allows girl to go out on dates right..

Is this your kid or are you the 14-year old? Either way she/you are a spoiled brat. Cell phone? No way. How about getting a part-time job?

No. A 14 year old girl who gets whatever she wants will be irresponsible (will use too many minutes and ignore the plan.)
