There are medical insurance companies for pets now. Ask at your vet's office.
Also, Banfield (the veterinarian at Petsmart) has a wonderful program that is cheap. I have my dog on it, so does my auntie. You get alot for your money, and low monthly payments.
I also have a "Pet Jar" that I put loose change in. That,s an emergency fund.
I don't know if any of these I mentioned will accept anything other than dogs and cats, but you can ask.

Dogs and cats require food, water and vet care as needed for shots, etc. Pet care is not cheap. If you do not want to spend a lot of money, get a small animal like a hamster, gerbil, or guinea pig. Costs are less to care for.

It’s depend on which dog breed do you have? In my opinion you can take care of your dog in seasonal causes (winter/summers).
