8 cubes with 3 red sides (the original corners of the big cube)

12 cubes with 2 red sides (the middles/edges of the big cube)

6 cubes with 1 red side (the centers of each side of the big cube)

1 cube with no red sides. (the core of the original cube)

8+12+6+1 = 27

The eight smaller cubes that were corners of the original cube will have 3 surfaces painted. The one cube in the center of the original cube will have none. the six cubes that are in the center of the six faces of the original cube will have one surface painted. That's 8+1+6=15. So the other twelve will have 2 surfaces painted.

I'm guessing this is a homework question so I'm not going to hand you the answer, but basically you have cubes that are 3x3x3... there will be one in the center with no paint, the ones on the edges but not corners will have paint on 2 sides, the corner ones will have paint on 3 sides, and the ones in the middle of each face of the larger cube will only have one... You can count them yourself. Draw a picture if it helps:-)

...or, I guess I won't since other people already handed the answer to you...

a. 1
b. 12
c. 8
d. 6

if you divide the cube with three slices to each dimension: three along width, three along height and three along depth, you get 27 smaller equal cubes. imagine the cube intact again. there will be one small cube inside that will have no red paint. the corners of the large cube will be the 3 red sided smaller cubes, and there are 8 corners...the 2 red sided cubes are the center of the edges of the larger cube--12 edges...and the single red sided cube is found on the center of each face of the large cube...there are 6 faces to the cube.
