It depended on his age. When he was very young he'd hear what we were listening too, some of which had curses, but none of it was very lewd. Besides, as soon as he got to public school in first grade he knew all the words anyway.

For a while I made sure I listened with him so that I could discuss the lyrics (and video, if applicable), and why hearing something in a song does not make it socially acceptable behavior. Now he's 15, and I guess I stopped really monitoring once he got to middle school. At that point there was no way to restrict what he heard because the kids all had cd players and would burn discs for each other. Now with his video iPod he has some videos on there that can't be shown on MTV.

It's really hard to restrict kids nowadays, and besides, my parents were overprotective, and we wound up rebelling -- so that usually backfires. I just try to stay current with what's going on in his world, I let him play his stuff in the car (unless I have a headache or something), I go through his stuff (including his IM logs, which he doesn't like), and I keep my eyes and ears open for the things he says and doesn't say.

I don't "punish" him anymore, I just keep talking to him about what is right and what isn't (and why). I'm not so old that I've forgotten what it was like, and I know he'll do what he wants anyway. I just hope that some of what I say gets through. We can talk about most stuff because of it, and I like that we have a good relationship that has evolved as he's grown older and more mature.

Being a music lover myself, I like keeping current and to broaden my horizons regarding musical styles or "genres", so I actually like some of the songs he listens to.

My kids are under 8, so I am very careful. Nothing from the radio. If I listen to it, my kids should be able to hear it too. So, I am careful.

Whatever they want to...they are going to listen to it anyways regardless if "I let" them...So why not, just let them, and teach them what's right and wrong and raise them with manners
