Is it wrong to wear pattern with pattern?

yesterday i was wearing a striped polo with some plaid shorts and a friend of mine commented that i wasn't matching because "it's a fashion law that you should never wear pattern with pattern."

You should wear a plain with a pattern, then you don't look too busy. Or a plain with a plain, but not 2 pattern items. You don't want the fashion police after you do you now??

well pattern with pattern isnt necessarily bad. but ehh not stripes and plaid. it really depends on colors and stuff but i wouldnt do it.

Naw if its cool like Burberry with polo or soemthign just make sure it looks dollar bill with it instead of played out.
