That number is approximate. From Wikipedia: "the speed of light is exactly 299,792,458 metres per second" . But this is in a vacuum only. The speed of light depends on the medium through which it is passing, but it will always be slower than in a vacuum. The ratio of the speed of light in a medium to the speed in a vacuum is called the refractive index of the medium.

False, but only by a slight margin. The real value is for the speed of light in vacuum is 186282.397051228 miles per second.

It is easier in metrci system,. since the metre is not defined as the distance that is travelled exactly 299792458 times in one second by light in a vacuum.

generally correct. whether it is true depends on what level of scinece class you are in. it good enough to do many calculations.

at this time, the speed of light , as best we can measure it, is
approximately 186,282.397 miles per second

But every ten or 20 years, we get a more precise figure - adding another decimal place or so.

True.... but the figure is not precise, rather a rough approximation. It's close enough to work with, but I prefer 300,000 kilometers per second myself.

thats what school teaches me, but one site on the internet about common misconceptions said it was false for some reason..
