I work in a technical field and interviews can grind on for hours. About as much fun as tooth extraction without anesthetic. If I start the inquiry process with the HR recruiter person she/he will sell me on how wonderful everything is and try to get me in for an interview proper. How best to find out if a company is worth giving them 4-5 hours or stress and sweat?

To impress then at the interview it important to background check on the company. Because they will be inpress that you went to the bother of finding out. There are way to find out Internet local newspaper etc. Giving the history of the company who founded it etc. How not to be stress is highlight the important points i.e how many countries they export to: how many other locations they have i.e middle east far east, Europe etc. Just put them in bullet points the interviewee won't expect you to know all but impress with the little information you have and hey best of luck at the interview

If you want financial info, check the co's website for statements.

Or Yahoo News -> business and search for press releases, get the stock update, check message board, look for news on their industry and competitor.

Business publications (Forbes, Fortune, BusinessWeek) have annual Best 100 companies to work for articles for the qualitiative data.

Call the company's customer service line and ask if they like working there, what's it like, etc.

Arrive early for the interview and speak with the receptionist about the company. Talk with the admin. assistant for the hiring manager.

Google them, call the local chamber of commerce, and sometimes their website is revealing.
