Build a sort of shed around it. As long as you allow enough room for air flow on all sides (3 feet or so), it'll be fine.

I asked the guy who installed my ac unit about protecting it from the elements. He told me that they are built and intended to be outside in the weather and that they can take it.

build a lattace top for it and keep it about 1 ft. from the top of unit....get the small sq type.......
