I feel like calling smoking a bad habit downplays the danger that cigarettes bring. Cigarettes are the most addicting thing with the easiest access too, and it sickens me that more and more kids get addicted to it everyday. Dealing with the addiction is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with.

Because the tobacco companies would like us to think of it as only a habit.

The words habit and addiction are synonyms, and used to describe each other (if you bother to look into dictionary). The difference is mostly a degree: a habit is often "an act or practice so frequently repeated as to become almost automatic". While addiction suggests a pathological weakness: Addicted - "Given over to a pursuit, practice, or habit".

While I agree with you in your expression of frustration over kids smoking and would like to offer congratulations for overcoming your own bad habit (which I have done as well), I must point out that kids have just as easy access to drugs, and withdrawal symptoms from quitting smoking are nothing like withdrawal caused by cocaine and some other highly addictive substances.
So if I could choose what bad habit will my kids will develop (with none not being an option) I'd pick smoking over everything else - least debilitating and easiest to quit.

Another statement of yours - "Dealing with the addiction is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with" - tells me that you either extremely young, or you're so focused on your own persona that immense suffering and misery that permeates every corner of this world (including your hometown) is a foreign subject to you.

As someone who had enough determination to overcome physical and psychological dependency on smoking, you are in a position to analyze both aspects of the habit: what made you smoke, and what made you quit. That knowledge could be applied to influence those you know who still smoke, and thus you would be making a personal effort against the bad habit that frustrates you so much. Would not that be a better course of action instead of asking a question on Yahoo that will not change anything or benefit anyone?

From my point of view, this is a bad habit b/c scientists and Doctors have said that this extremely affects you as person and can damage any organ inside, that's why this being a habit can definitely cause you various disorders you didn't think would have. It trully is an extreme addiction b/c people seem to smoke more every day of their lives, but what we do, they do it because their anxiety has more force and go beyond many things, in which they don't care. They finally care when their in hospital, that's when they comprehend what they have done to their lives and the great mistakes they have committed! We cannot change people, they change their selves as they confront situations that makes them open their eyes and realize what life offers us everyday by giving us great resources to enjoy!

The effects of nicotine withdrawal last less than a week. The problem is everytime we enter a situation where we last smoked we are tempted to complete the picture with our habitual cigarette. This is a strong habit impulse for a year and is pretty much controlled in 3 years.

bad habit & extreme addiction are not mutually exclusive terms. it is an addiction-forming habit, to be exact. best luck to you in beating the addiction.

your right, it is an extreme addiction but "a bad habit" is something you do repeatedly even though you know its bad. smoking is bad and most people know it but still repeatedly do it.
