I am not a vet tech or assistant, but I have a friend that was , for several years. If you are looking to get into this type of work, you should start calling around to different vet offices and see if any are willing to hire and train you. It isn't necessarily a state law that you be certified, but rather is based on the discretion of the vet. My friend had no experience at all when she applied except for her owning 2 dogs. She worked there for 4 years. She would assist with surgery and take blood and everything. Sometimes, if you can get in to a good vet and schooling is required to go further, your job will even pay for the advanced training.
Good Luck!!

I was trained on the job with no experience 20 years ago, then went back to school to become certified as a technician. Lot's of assistants are on the job trained. I'm in Florida. It helps if you have pets and are comfortable working around animals.

I took a 5 month course that had a 3 week practicum afterwards. The animal health industry doesn't pay big like human health, but that also depends on the clinic that you work at. I got hired at the clinic where I had my practicum, which is a small place and I get to work in the back as well with the animals. I enjoy it tons!
