Any 'music' you find objectionable is noise, and will actually do harm to you.
Of course, rap is not music, all other genres have things that I like and things I don't.
In classical music, Bela Bartok and Hindemith make me sick. They both write music (sic) that sounds like an orchestra tuning up, badly.
I like pop, folk music, rock, ballads, love songs, operas and operettas, waltzes, military music, even some of the older church music can be pleasant, but everything in its time and in moderation.

I have about 2,000 melodies on my computer, about 12GB.
From the classics of the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s. The various singers and composers, the Beatles, Barry Manilow, John Denver, ABBA, Madonna, Petula Clark, Pat Benetar, Diana Krall, Janet Jackson, Kim Wilde, and the list goes on and on.
And all of those also have things I would never listen to a second time.
But as a non musician I am the most eclectic music fan I know.

If I understand your question correctly, music was music to me at one time, but then it became noise. You want me to pinpoint when, for me, the music becomes noise. Well, for me, I load my fav tunes onto my MP3player and listen to them while I do stuff on the computer....read email, answer email, manipulate pixels, etc etc.

At this point it is music.

When I get involved with what I am doing, and I become aware that the music is hindering my concentration, it becomes noise and I turn it off.

So my answer is music becomes noise when it interrupts my concentration. When it interupts my concentration, it draws the line, and I shut it off.

What genre puzzles me and makes me think I read the question wrong...which does happen...

Sooo.....the question is really, what genre of music do I not think is music????

That is an easy one. Rap. I llike Christian Rap,KJ-52 is my fav Rapper of that genre, but the other type...no, I don't consider that music.

Whew.

I hope I answered your question :)

I believe that this is a personal thing. For example, I worked in a cafe with another person who wanted the radio on because she couldn't stand the quietness of day when we had no customers. I on the other hand hate just having the radio on for noise sake. It drives me crazy yet when I am in the car or in my house, I will put music on and it won't bother me.

It is a matter of taste. Where do you draw the line? If art was restricted to a line of demarcation, it would no longer be art. Mozart and 50 cent may both be artists, by many people's standards, but where would they draw the line? It is clearly a matter of taste!

When you can no longer hear a message behind it and the lyrics fade away. Every genre has its own examples. Rock: Alexis on Fire, Pop: Britney Spears, Punk: Greenday, etc...

Btw I agree with Corey (see below), St. Anger sucked and I'm a big Metallica fan

The emo crap that has become popular these days. That is just noise. Personally, I never cared for the Nirvana sound either... just sounded like a bunch of whiney nonsense... which is pretty much what emo music sounds like to me.

When you can MAYBE pick out one word out of twenty. Then it's too loud and too annoying. Screaming is noise. Music with rhythm is definitely not noise. I personally like Christian rock. It's right before it gets there. It rocks...

Rap is more like a documentary with a beat.
Also, anytime someone is screaming, not singing, and you can't understand a word they are saying, that is noise.
Some other music might be equally annoying, but it could still be considered music.
