Its a common mistake. Socialism is the method and communism is the end state. Socialism is the search for "social justice and once the search is over you have communism.
After all they are based on the same idea. That being that to achieve equality everything must be distributed more fairly. Those with less must be given more. But there's the catch government bureaucrats don't produce anything so before they can give they have to take. Taking from one to give to another until there's nothing left to take but life itself, then they take that as well.
