The hard core golfers can be considered athletes. I have some friends who are very serious about their golf game. They log in hours and hours of gym time to get their abs, and arm muscles in top working order.

Yes, golfers are athletes because they use a lot of arm muscles.
Golf is because the object is to get the ball in the hole and it is kinda active, although boring in my opinion.

Golfers have to train on their technique, hitting ,putting, and the like.
An athlete has a more physical and mental demand on themselves.
Golf is a sport and they are not athletes.

of course:
1. it a competition
2. requires practice
3. must have excellent eye hand coordination
4. must enjoy competing
5. must have agility
6. tiger woods is in ridiculously good shape
7. it is skill
8. if you think because some people are fat they are not atheletes, then you just ruled out babe ruth as an athelete as well.
