"In the US, racism is a well known issue. From racial profiling to other issues such as affirmative action, police brutality against minorities and the history of slavery and the rising resentment against immigrants.

Since the horrific terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, Security concerns have understandbly increased, but so too has racial profiling, discrimination etc. In the early aftermath of the attacks some Americans that were understandably outraged and horrified, even attacked some members of the Sikh community where at least one was even killed, because they resembled certain types of Muslims, with beards and turbans. Various people of Middle East or South Asian origin have faced controversial detensions or questionings by officials at American airports."

I think racism has gotten worse rather than better in the U.S. I can't speak to racism in other countries. Nations have a history of increased racial profiling and racism in times of percieved threat to national security. I don't think the threat is greater, but the U.S government exploited post Sept. 11 fears to fuel war against Iraq. Unfortunately anti-Muslim bigotry increased as well. It seems that bigotry and intolerance are always lurking just beneath the surface...

As the white majority in this country shrinks in size and blood- degree the extreme fundamentalists feel the squeeze and becoming more brazen about coming out with their true feelings of fear.I don't think that racism is greater,I believe that public displays of subtle racism are greater.this is an election year.
Take a look at the Governor of Massachusetts today.Blatantly using the term "tar baby" and then playing it off as though he meant it in a old school way.Yeah,bullshit.If that wasn't a battle cry from the white extremists I don't know what is.

Everything is different but the same. It used to be literally black and white and it was easy to know what racism was. It seems like it got better for a couple of decades then something happened. Now it seems that racism is becoming prevalent again, but now there are many different races in the USA, all of which have people that are racist. And I think a lot of people keep their feelings to themselves or don't even realize the prejudices they have. It will take a strong national leader to heal the new festering wounds of racism.

It's bigger now and more complex. It's more nuanced: plain racism, xenophobia, ethnocentrism, patriarchism, sexism, fundamentalisms, homophobia... you name it.
