Simply banning the timber trade or establishing reserves will not be enough to salvage the world's remaining tropical rainforests. In order for the forests to be preserved, the underlying social, economic, and political reasons for deforestation must be recognized and addressed. Once the issues are brought into the light, the decision can be made about what should be done. If it is decided that rainforests must be saved, then the creation of multi-use reserves that promote sustainable development and education of local peoples would be a good place to start. Currently about 6 percent of the world's remaining forests are protected, meaning that over 90 percent are still open for the taking. However, even this 6 percent is not safe if the proper steps towards sustainable development are not taken. Where possible, reforestation and restoration projects should be encouraged if we, humanity, hope to emerge from the current environmental situation without serious, long-term consequences.

Destruction of rain forests can't be fixed. It might be stopped, but I doubt it. People have deforested the planet, not only South America. The Sahara is expanding because of deforestation and stripping away of the pasturage. The North American continent was probably two-thirds covered with forest when the first explorers and settlers arrived. Europe has been denuded of vast forests and Italy has almost no natural forests to speak of. Lebanon was famous for it's cedar groves in Biblical days, but now has few forests of any kind. So, you tell me, what can we do about stopping the destruction of the rain forests?

Stop eating soy products!

It sounds ironic but the fact is that soy is the new big cash crop and most of the destruction of the Amazonian (and other) rain forests is to plant soy plantations. It's true. The notion that this was for beef grazing was long ago exposed as a crock, a lie. Nobody who produces beef themselves is buying it from South America.

For one we can quit eating fast food beef. The rain forest is being cut and burned down to make grazing land for cattle that is imported to make whoppers and bigmacs.Buy local beef only if you can.
Any Brazilian product beef, pork, flowers, fruit and even cotton is highly responsible for the cultivation and destruction of the rain forest. The Indians that live there are being forced into the city and are turning into alcoholics and crackheads.Prostitution and poverty run rampant and are a direct result of eating at burger king and eating anything imported from Brazil.

Individually use no more of anything than we need. Stop making children, ride bikes instead of driving cars and vote the Republicans out of office!!!

Find other means for the paper and the wood we need, or stop populating. Those are the only other choices there are.

You cannot repair what nature took millions of years to build. Unfortunately we may be able to slow the problem, but we cannot repair it.

Cut everything in them down, build a big fence around them, and let them start all over
