Absolutely not.
Republicans seem to reward blind loyalty over all else and punish free thinkers (ie, remember House member Delay was called The Hammer for whipping them in line).
Hagel will have a difficult time getting any of his proposals to the floor now.

I hope Hagel won't widen the rebellion against Bush's policies, but Republicans have always been wayward. Unlike the socialists on the other side of the aisle, Republicans are rarely in lockstep with each other.
It would be insane to go against Bush's Middle East policies, as they are the only policies on the area that make sense.

They have already been breaking away from Bush's camp, distancing themselves. Hagel is not the first.
The Republican leader of the Judicial Committee is filing a class action suit against the president. Six Republicans from both houses have signed on to the suit already.

As Bush's popularity declines, it becomes politically safer for Republicans to break with the President. When the decline becomes severe enough, it becomes politically risky not to break with the President. The same thing happens to Democratic presidents when their popularity starts to slip. It is the same principle with rats and sinking ships.
In answer to your second question, generally Republicans are not encouraged to be free thinkers and encourage debate. They are big believers in the party line.

republicans are very free and long range thinkers. I just read the senators story and when I came to the part that said "Presidential hopeful" I laughed and put it into the context with which it was written. This guy can save his money....he doesn't have the balls to protect his local dog pound let alone this nation.

I hope it does. The current Republican leadership has "hijacked" the party for their own purposes. The Republican party needs more people like Hagel & McCain and less like Chaney & Rove.

Maybe. The prez needs to quit tip toeing around with the war. We are fighting politically correctly . Take the gloves off , bring in more troops , and fight. This kind off soft touch war never works
