Well, it can't be good for either him or the table. It's time to separate the two.
I used to bang my head against the wall in my crib. I remember just liking the feel and the rhythm. It made my parents crazy, though (perhaps I liked that too). Overall, I turned out okay.

My 9 year old did this too when he was a baby.
I personally think it was because he knew it would get my attention and that my wife would coddle him if he did each and every time. Not to sound harsh, but just once, when he does it, ignore him. If he does it again, make a comment like "I bet that hurt". He'll eventually learn that it hurts and that he won't get coddled each time he does it.
There's also the chance that he simply enjoys the sensation of pain, as some children (and adults) do seem to enjoy it for some odd reason. If he keeps it up, please speak with a pediatrician about it soon.

Strangely, this is a method that young children use to comfort themselves. Something like rocking back and forth, but much harder on the head! Obviously, try to make sure that he doesn't whack his head too hard on the table. You may also want to introduce something else that he can soothe himself with, like a musical toy, a little rocking chair or something like that.
You may want to purchase the book "What to Expect in the First Year"-kind of the sequel to "What to Expect When You're Expecting". It has tons of great info for new parents. It was a huge help to me when I had little tikes!

Try to get him something else to bang on, Like maybe a pot from the kitchen and a wooden spoon. He may be just trying to get attention, or he may like the noise, or the vibrating sensation he gets it his head. Who know why toddlers do some of the strange things they do. I would try to get him to do something else, and teach him that's a no no if he keeps doing it. "Nice table, No No"

We had a cat that did that. He had banged his noggin really good. The vet said he was trying to make it stop hurting...It sounds like something you should contact his ped. about. It may be an injury or stress. Are you going thru a bout of yelling with the wife or gf? show him you love him, and distract him with a toy.

no need to be concerned.. your son found a rhythm. he banged his head one time and it made a sound. he learned if he does it, it'll always make a sound..
my son is going through the exact same thing.. as a matter of fact, i think he's doing it right now.
just make sure he isn't hurting himself

To me, that sounds like a reaction to something tramatic. Have there been any stressful situations lately? Maybe arguing? Loud noises? Just give him a big hug when he starts it up, that's what I would say.
