You CANNOT install XP over ME properly. Some people will tell you that you can. You cannot. I work on computer systems ALL the time and I'm also a Microsoft Beta Tester and on the TS2 Team, you CANNOT install ME over XP and expect it to work properly.
You will have to fully remove ME from the system BEFORE you can install XP. The two OS's are simply not compatible. Even installing XP over 98/98SE is not a good idea. It can be done, just not properly without doing a FULL uninstall/removal of the former OS before installing XP.
See the below site for more info.

I wouldn't, and here's why.
Windows XP needs 512 MB of memory to be fast. Anything less, makes it slow as an old hound dog.
Windows XP also is hungry for some disk space. 20GB would be a bit tight, anything less would be a joke.
So if you do want your "hunk of junk" to be faster, you might consider uninstalling unused programs and making it a lean, mean computin' machine.
Get more RAM. Go to http://www.coastmemory.com and look for your computer and model. This will do the help.
Also, keep your own Anti-virus up to date, and check the status regularly.
Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an unexpected pop-up.
Download and install FireFox free from http://www.mozilla.com This is a browser that is safer to use than IE. Use this for general surfing and google searching. Only use IE when you MUST have IE, such as Windows Updates.
Get Zone Alarm the free version from http://www.zonelabs.com
Run MSCONFIG and turn off most of the startup programs, except your antivirus.
Take these steps to keep your computer ALIVE.

well first off, there is nothing wrong with windows ME, and XP encounters many more problems (so you have to download many more updates etc.)
you cannot intall XP in ME in that sense. you can only have on or the other. personally, i need windows ME because many of my pc games do not run on XP, and i use XP for work. i had to get a professional to completely redo my computer. what he did was he split my hard drive into 3 drives, C, D, and E. he then installed windows ME on the C drive, windows XP on the D drive, and he suggested that i install everything else on the E drive, so when my computer is running nothing will slow it down. i suggest going to a software shop and getting their recomendations.

You just install it as an upgrade. But before you do be sure that the computer is fast enough and has enough memory, since XP is MUCH more demanding than ME
Microsoft has a program you can run on your computer that will tell you whether XP will run OK on it. XP takes an absolute minimum of 256MB RAM. Personally I wouldn't want to use it with less than 512MB (I am using 1.5GB myself).

First let ME ask why in the world would you want crap like XP on your computer? Either go back to Win98SE, install a Win2000. If you have DSL there is nothing as good as Linux. use Puppy Linux or even ALinux. Puppy can be downloaded into your Windows system and run it from there. With as little as 128mRAM it works GREAT!

Before you try, a sensible thing to do is to determine if the "hunk of junk" has the necessary "ingredients" to run XP. PC Pitstop has a very handy on-line utility to do this. It's at the below link. Good luck.

Just run the disc, but you are best doing a "clean" install, wipe your hard drive with fdisk.
