My dad just got ripped off at Best Buy, having the Geek Squad install a whole bunch of antivirus/backup software I could've installed for free.

He gets ripped off, embarassingly a lot, and despite what I try to tell him, he never learns.

Do people who are suckers bother you? Why are some people so stupid with money? Does it show that they don't respect themselves or their future in a way? Maybe it's a rich people thing, because he's a doctor?

What's the deal?

And he put it on a credit card, even though he didn't have to.

I was with him when he went shopping for the laptop. I told him he didn't need it. He bought it anyway while I was at work!

Well I think sometimes people that CAN afford it, would rather pay to have it done for them than to deal with all the detail & hassle of doing it themselves. Did you tell your Dad you could do the same thing for him for free? Maybe he doesn't realize you know how to do those types of things. I would certainly tell him ...in case there's a next time. Good Luck & God Bless!

I've grown to notice that many smart "intellectual" books smarts people lack common sense. i think it is true. My mother does the same thing. She doesn't listen to me either. It bothers me some but I'd never let it steal my joy. I think people who never learned to value a dollar or never had to value a dollar are more irresponsible with their money. I don't think its a respect issue though, it could arise from many factors. For example, my mother is the youngest daughter and the 2nd to youngest child out of 8 children. A lot of my moms dumb, impulsive spending I think is from always not being able to get what she wanted as a child or always getting the left overs and hand me downs. They were pretty poor growing up and I think she doesn't want to feel poor anymore even though she is headed that way with her spending. It could be the same for rich people. Them having to be so concerned about every little penny at one point to becoming a wealthy doctor.

Well,...he IS a doctor....so he's better off than Joe Ordinary. Try to look at it this way....at least he provides work and a living to those in a lesser life-style. Lets face it, if it wasn't for the people like your Dad and thousands of others like him many kinds of businesses would not survive. I do my own renovations. Neighbours and friends asked about the cost of some ceramic tile work I had done in my home. When I told them my cost....they felt they had been ripped off. I had to explain that they did not get ripped off. They paid the fair going rate. I have connections...I bought my tiles and materials wholesale and did the installation myself. They paid regular store price for tiles and material and 2 mens labour cost at a fair rate. I have knowledge and skills and connections they don't have and get materials etc. sometimes for nothing or next to nothing.
You, also have talents, knowledge, connections and skills your father doesn't have.
People like us, and others, do not pay retail. However, the majority of the rest, (without your talents and knowledge) are what keeps this economy rolling and gives others jobs. I'm sure inwardly,... your father knows and is aware of this. It's his way of spreading it around.
HEY....RELAX.....if he's a Doctor....he ain't no DUMMY

No, because if it werent for the suckers, alot of people wouldnt be getting money. Like some guy paid me money to dl this free thing on his computer.

Its like...mmm.

If he never learns, stop teaching him, and he should notice sooner or later that he is being ripped off. And if he doesnt, let him go on. He doesnt seem to have a problem with it.

I find people with no financial common sense to be arrogant, like they are too important to worry about money.
Suckers bother me because they chose to be suckered.
Why are people so stupid with money? Because it's EASY to be stupid. Being financially responsible takes effort.

If you're asking whether I feel sorry for ninety-eight percent of the population, the answer is, "No." If you're asking whether I feel sorry for your dad, the answer is still, "No." We all have to learn from out own experiences and we all have a right to make our own mistakes. The best lessons come from having made mistakes. If your dad doesn't want to learn from them, don't make his problems your problems. I'm sixty-four and it took me about fifty years to learn this. Take it to heart.

Yes that sort of stuff bothers me. People with money don't really have to care though, they have plenty. Although with your situation, I think I would just be hurt that my dad would rather spend the money than let me do it for him. That is just me.

I don't feel sorry for those people, unless they are mentally challenged or disabled somehow. Then, I feel like they are sometimes kind of victimized by financial predators.
